Japan's largest Buddhist temple
Sensoji Temple is the oldest temple in Tokyo and known as one of the best sightseeing spots in Tokyo with more than 30 million visitors each year. Just after getting off at Asakusa Station, you can see the red Kaminarimon which is the famous outermost gate of Sensoji Temple, and Asakusa's best known landmark. Nakamise shopping street runs for 250 meters and is lined on both sides with shops selling traditional souvenirs, snacks, and restaurants. The history of Sensoji Temple dates back to the Asuka Period, founded in 628 A.D. Influential people from every age have come here to pray for prosperity.
Fascinating ambience of the old and new Japanese culture
Inside the temple grounds there are various buildings. Hozomon Gate was called Niomon Gate because the stature of Nio was preserved there. After being rebuilt under the donation of Tokugawa Lemitsu, it is renamed as Hozomon Gate. Five-story Pagoda, as a masterpiece of historic Japanese architecture, was lost once by fire and rebuilt in 1973. Large crowds of tourists flocking here makes it difficult to stroll around or take picture freely so we recommend coming earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon for the best photo opportunities. In addition, you could revel in the relaxed and quiet atmosphere after dark.
