Nestled in a quiet backstreet of Nakameguro, Anju (庵樹) is a standalone Japanese restaurant that opened in October 2020. With the charm of a hidden retreat, it combines the elegance of modern design with the warmth of traditional Japanese hospitality. The restaurant specializes in authentic Japanese cuisine while adding subtle creative touches, presented through monthly-changing courses that celebrate the flavors of each season. Each floor offers a different atmosphere: the first floor features lively counter seating with an open kitchen, the second floor offers semi-private tables, and the third floor provides a completely private room. Whether for a casual evening, a special occasion, or an intimate dinner, Anju leaves guests with the feeling that they will want to return again and again.
The Standard Course features seven carefully crafted seasonal dishes, focusing on fresh seafood and vegetables. The Special Course offers an elevated dining experience—an indulgent reward of Japanese cuisine—featuring seasonal nigiri sushi, premium meat dishes, and other specialties prepared with abundant seasonal ingredients. This course requires reservations at least two days in advance. Both courses are designed with modest portions for each dish, allowing guests to enjoy a wide variety without feeling overwhelmed. With traditional techniques enhanced by creative accents, each dish brings out the essence of its ingredients. Diners often find themselves looking forward to the next plate, making every visit feel like a unique culinary journey.
Drinks at Anju are just as thoughtfully curated as the food. A certified Kikisake-shi (sake sommelier) selects seasonal sake, including local brews, unpasteurized sake (namazake), and autumn releases (hiyaoroshi), matched perfectly to the monthly menu. The wine list highlights crisp whites that pair beautifully with fish and Japanese dishes, sourced from France, Italy, Austria, California, and more. Guests may even discover hidden bottles not listed on the menu by asking the staff. For those who enjoy food-and-drink pairings, the lineup is ideal—every visit brings new discoveries that spark conversation and elevate the dining experience.
The exterior is a sleek townhouse-style design. Inside, a calm and refined space welcomes guests into a world far removed from the city’s bustle. On the first floor, wooden counter seats face an open kitchen, where diners can enjoy the excitement of watching chefs at work. The second floor features semi-private tables in a warm and tranquil setting, while the third floor offers a completely private room—ideal for business dinners, anniversaries, or formal occasions. The blend of modern elegance with traditional Japanese touches creates a stylish yet soothing atmosphere, making Anju a place where guests can relax and fully savor the dining experience.
