Only 40 minutes from central Tokyo by train! A zoo where you can meet animals living vividly in a vast and nature-rich site.
Tama Zoological Park is located in Hino City, Tokyo. It is one of the largest zoos in Japan, with a wide variety of animals of about 300 species on its vast grounds. The zoo is divided into four areas: the Asian Zone, Australian Zone, African Zone, and The Insectarium, where visitors can enjoy a variety of exhibits that match the characteristics of the animals and the creatures native to each area. Particularly popular are the "Lion Bus," where visitors ride in a bus to see lions, and the "Skywalk Tower," which takes advantage of the ecology of orangutans that live in trees. Visitors can also see the cute koalas, which are only kept in a limited number of places in Japan. We hope you will enjoy the unique animal performances that can only be seen here.
A must-see experience at the African Zone, where you can enjoy exhibits of animals living in the savanna, is the Lion Bus, a powerful tour that brings you up close and personal with the king of all beasts, the lion. This is an exciting tour that takes you to see the lions in a spacious holding area on a bus. Adults and children alike will be excited to see the lions approaching through a single pane of glass! It is an exciting and thrilling experience as if you have wandered into the world of the savanna. The zoo was the first in the world to start this unique exhibition method in 1964. Tickets can be purchased at the Lion bus station inside the zoo for the day of the ride.
*Please note that the tour will end as soon as it is sold out.
One of the unique attractions of Tama Zoological Park is the Skywalk Tower, which connects the orangutan forest and the orangutan house located at the back of the Asian Zone. The exhibit, which takes advantage of the orangutans' characteristic of living in trees, allows visitors to watch the orangutans move along a wire above their heads as if they were crossing branches in the jungle.
Also, the Koala House in the Australian Zone houses koalas and small Australian animals, and you can even observe koalas eating eucalyptus.
In the Insectarium, visitors can tour two facilities: the Insectopia, where visitors can stroll among beautiful, colorful butterflies, and the Insectarium Center, where visitors can see rare foreign species such as the leaf-cutter ants and glow worms. Visitors will be able to catch a glimpse of insects in their natural habitat, which they would not normally be able to observe in detail.
The total area of Tama Zoological Park, which is dotted with many attractions, is a whopping 52.3 hectares, and with several restaurants and cafes on the grounds and a free shuttle bus that makes the rounds, you can spend a very satisfying day enjoying the many animal exhibits if you make good use of them.
